Energy comparison site hits a million

The Australian Energy Regulator has recorded more than a million visits to its Energy Made Easy price comparator website since August last year.

Minister for the Environment and Energy, Josh Frydenberg, welcomed the milestone saying visits to the comparator helped households get a better energy deal.

“This means many more Australians are taking charge of their energy bills and shopping around to reduce their energy costs,” Mr Frydenberg said.

“Consumers can save hundreds of dollars by switching from an average standing offer to the best market offer.”

He said extra funding had been provided for the website to make it simpler to use and easier to compare and choose between deals.

Mr Frydenberg also said he had asked the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) to make a new rule forcing energy retailers to tell households when they were on an expensive standing offer.

“The new rule will require retailers to contact those customers who have been on a standing offer for more than 12 months and encourage them to consider better alternatives,” Mr Frydenberg said.

“Standing offers tend to be the most expensive offers in the market,” he said.

“The AEMC has found the difference between the average standing offer and the best market offer is between $170 and $507 per year.

“This new rule will help households get a better deal.”

Mr Frydenberg said that even in South Australia, the State with the lowest proportion of standing offer customers, more than one in 10 customers were signed up to these deals and were paying up to $800 more than necessary.
