The Recycling Discovery Hub at Hume has undergone upgrades that are now complete, allowing school and community groups to receive tailored education programs to further their understanding of waste and recycling in the ACT.
Representing the Minister for Transport and City Services at the launch of the upgrade, Tara Cheyne MLA said the Hub offered visitors the opportunity to experience a virtual reality tour of the Materials Recovery Facility and have a go at sorting materials.
“This form of technology is a great way to highlight what happens to our recycling when it leaves the yellow kerbside bin at home and what we can do to recycle well,” Ms Cheyne said.
“Last year the ACT launched the state-of-the-art Materials Recovery Facility with upgrades to the sorting equipment and now we have a showcase recycling education space to match.”
She said the Hub incorporated highly engaging displays and hands-on interactive activities, including reclaimed and repurposed fixtures and fittings along with innovative displays of surprising everyday items made from recycled materials.
Caroline Le Couteur MLA, who also attended the event, said the design of the room highlighted new and emerging recycled products including carpet made from recycled plastic fishing nets and bottles, as well as a kitchen benchtop made with glass sand from the Materials Recovery Facility.
