ACT Chief Minister, Andrew Barr has paid tribute to the strength and resilience of the Canberra community on the 17th anniversary of the 2003 Canberra bushfires.

Mr Barr described 18 January as a day of reflection for the community as they remembered the devastating fires that claimed four lives and more than 500 homes.

“Every member of the ACT community who lived here 17 years ago was affected in some way by the bushfire crisis,” Mr Barr said.

“January 18 has always been a day of reflection for this community but this year, in particular, our feelings will be heightened following the devastation of the NSW and Victorian bushfires, and the poor air quality we have been experiencing.”

Mr Barr said he wanted to remind Canberrans to reach out for help if needed.

“If you are feeling distressed by the current situation you are not alone,” he said.

“There is support available.”

“It’s important to remember that everyone is different and there is no right or wrong way to respond.”

He said there were many community services offering counselling and support, along with online resources that could give strategies for helping to manage distress.
